Mostly made in Flash. For 's css journal contest.
I wanna win a subscription. hehe...
It's in .swf form 'so you can see the little animation there. Of course, I'd convert this to .gif if I win.
EDIT 1: Changed the title font
EDIT 2: Changed the red part of the bg, the font color and alignment
Ermmm..well,honestly,I can't give you much advice, because I've never participated in one of these contests, but here's what I think:
1.-- the general look is kinda flat one,and from my experience, that's never something good
To give it more depth, try adding some impression of "light coming this way" with the help of gradients.
2.--The text at the top is too cartoony, you should make it look more...evil,demonish Also.the black spikes like things at the top would need some more work too.
3.--Maybe try to add some gradient to the text boxes...? :/
PS.: Well,that's just what I think,as I said,I'm no expert,just saying from common sense...

For day-to-day/ordinary use,the entry looks great.
CSS isn't so much a programming language. It's more of a definition language. It defines how stuff is displayed on a page.
And this isn't bad for a start. I don't know why you picked Flash for display medium when a GIF would have sufficed. But that aside, your colour scheme needs some work. The mood text is very difficult to read for me, as is the font text when it fades into the black at the bottom. Might I suggest white for the general font colour (including the header)? And instead of black for the top part, maybe a dark red, or instead of fading from bright red to black, maybe a darker shade of red to black?
And the boxes aren't lined up. I know this is the effect you were after, but it might look better if they were more 'random', or more lined up.

I also thought I should change the font of the title.
